Boxer Lin Yu-ting Secures Bronze After Controversial Return

Lin Yu-ting achieved a significant victory at the Asian Boxing Elite Championships, marking a return to competition following a protracted eligibility challenge.

Lin Yu-ting, a 30-year-old Taiwanese boxer, secured a bronze medal at the Asian Boxing Elite Championships held in Mongolia. This accomplishment represents her first competitive bout since a significant dispute regarding her eligibility to compete in the 2024 Paris Olympic Games. The competition took place during the Asian Boxing Elite Championships, specifically on Monday, where she faced North Korea’s Won Un Gyong in the semifinals. Despite losing this match, she ultimately earned a bronze medal after advancing to the final round. Lin’s coach, Tseng Tzu-chiang, highlighted the strategic nature of the competition, stating that the team utilized the opportunity to analyze and adapt to the unfamiliar challenges presented by the 60kg division, following her Olympic gold win in the 57kg category. Prior to this recent success, Lin had opted to forego participation in the World Boxing Championships last year due to a contentious policy implemented by World Boxing, which mandated sex testing for female boxers as part of an updated eligibility protocol. This policy emerged following a similar dispute surrounding the gold medals won by Lin and Imane Khelif at the Paris Olympics. Following a successful appeal from Taiwan’s federation, Lin was recently granted clearance to compete in the female category, enabling her return to competition at the Asian championships. Coach Tseng expressed optimism about her future, noting her target is the Asian Games in Nagoya, Japan, slated for later this year. He acknowledged her relative inactivity, stating that while the loss was a learning experience, it provided a clear path for improvement. The International Olympic Committee (IOC) recently implemented a new eligibility policy for female athletes, restricting participation to those with a confirmed biological female status based on gene testing, a measure influenced by prior executive orders regarding sports participation.
