A projectile attack near Iran’s Bushehr nuclear facility resulted in a fatality and prompted international calls for restraint as multiple industrial sites faced strikes.
The Bushehr nuclear power plant, situated in the city of Bushehr, a region housing approximately 250,000 individuals, experienced a series of attacks Saturday, according to Iranian authorities. The fourth such incident since the commencement of hostilities between the United States and Israel targeted the facility, resulting in the death of a security personnel member after being struck by projectile fragments. Iranian officials reported that no elevated radiation levels were detected following the assault. Foreign Minister Abbas Araghchi publicly denounced the attacks, asserting that the Bushehr site was “bombed” four times during the ongoing conflict. The International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) expressed serious concern, emphasizing that nuclear sites and surrounding areas should be protected from attack, highlighting the potential for catastrophic safety consequences. IAEA Director General Rafael Grossi urged maximum military restraint to prevent a nuclear accident. Damage was limited to an auxiliary building at the plant, while the core power generation sections remained intact, according to the Atomic Energy Organization of Iran (AEOI). Simultaneously, US and Israeli forces conducted strikes against petrochemical facilities in Khuzestan province, a strategically vital energy center. Explosions and smoke were observed at the Mahshahr Petrochemical Special Economic Zone, impacting the Bandar Imam complex and other regional production sites. At least five individuals sustained injuries as a result of the attacks. Further escalating the situation, Iranian forces reported downing an MQ-1 drone in Isfahan province and forcing down two US warplanes. Isfahan, already a target in previous operations, continues to be subject to scrutiny. These developments underscore the intensifying nature of the conflict and the associated risks to critical infrastructure.
