Devastating Strikes Intensify Conflict, Fueling Community Divisions

A series of escalating attacks have caused widespread devastation and displacement across Lebanon, exacerbating existing societal tensions.

The city of Beirut experienced a particularly harrowing Sunday evening when a building in the Ain Saadeh district was struck by a series of explosions. Georges, a 44-year-old resident, witnessed the event unfold from his balcony, observing a US-manufactured GBU-39 bomb impact the structure behind him. This incident resulted in the deaths of three individuals: Pierre Moawad, a prominent figure within the anti-Hezbollah Lebanese Forces party, his wife, Flavia, and their visiting friend, Roula Mattar. The Ministry of Health confirmed these casualties as part of a broader pattern of losses impacting the Lebanese population. The attacks have disproportionately affected the Shia Muslim community, encompassing many individuals unconnected to Hezbollah, and have extended to Christians and Sudanese citizens. To date, the conflict has resulted in approximately 1,500 fatalities, including 130 children, and forced over 1.2 million people to leave their homes. Growing divisions within Lebanese society are fueled by the ongoing hostilities, with some factions placing primary blame on Israel for relentless attacks since October 2023, while others point to Hezbollah's actions as the catalyst for Israeli retaliation. Internal displacement has become a significant concern, with reports of discrimination against internally displaced individuals regardless of their political affiliations. Lebanon expert Michael Young, from the Carnegie Middle East Center, suggested that Israel’s actions are designed to create divisions and isolate the Shia community. He noted that incidents like the one in Ain Saadeh would likely reinforce this strategy. The conflict was reignited on March 2nd following Hezbollah’s initial response to Israeli attacks, which came in the wake of the assassination of Iranian Supreme Leader Ayatollah Ali Khamenei. Despite a ceasefire established in November 2024, marked by numerous violations by Israeli forces and ongoing casualties, Israel expanded its operations, issuing evacuation orders for southern Lebanon and Beirut’s southern suburbs – areas with strong Hezbollah support. Israeli forces continue to engage with Hezbollah in southern villages, intensifying the struggle for control and further complicating the humanitarian crisis.
