Iranian Official Warns US Against Allowing Israeli Attacks, Cites Netanyahu’s Trial as Motivation

A senior Iranian diplomat delivered a stark warning to the United States, accusing Israel of deliberately undermining a fragile truce in Lebanon while exploiting political instability.

Abbas Araghchi, Iran’s Foreign Minister, expressed concern that the United States’ inaction was enabling Israel’s intensified attacks on Lebanon, which have resulted in a significant loss of life since the cessation of hostilities. He linked the situation to Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu’s ongoing corruption trial, suggesting the fighting was a tactic to delay his arrest. Araghchi communicated this message directly to the US, stating that allowing Israel to disrupt the ceasefire would be a “dumb” decision, though Iran acknowledged being prepared for such a course of action. The disagreement regarding the inclusion of Lebanon within the initial truce agreement has escalated tensions and poses a serious threat to the stability of the region. Iranian officials have considered potential retaliatory measures, including military responses and a blockade of the Strait of Hormuz, to enforce the ceasefire’s application to Lebanon. Former US President Donald Trump recently advised Netanyahu to reduce the intensity of operations, urging a “low-key” approach. Similar sentiments were echoed by JD Vance, who expressed a shared assessment that the situation would be “dumb” if left unchecked. Recent Israeli actions have intensified the conflict, with deadly strikes causing widespread devastation and displacement. Specifically, Israeli forces issued an evacuation order for the Jnah area of Beirut, home to major hospitals and a large population, and conducted attacks that resulted in casualties, including the deaths of rescue workers. The situation echoes past concerns regarding US claims of restraint in Israel’s military actions, referencing a similar situation in Rafah, Gaza, where a “limited” operation escalated to widespread destruction. This pattern raises questions about the reliability of US assurances and the potential for further escalation within Lebanon.
