Israeli Military Threatens Bridge Destruction, Intensifies Assault on Southern Lebanon

Escalating violence in Lebanon sees the Israeli military preparing to demolish critical infrastructure, displacing hundreds of thousands and resulting in civilian casualties.

Israeli forces are preparing to systematically dismantle bridges within the western Bekaa Valley, specifically targeting the Sohmor and Mashghara bridges over the Litani River. This operation, announced by military spokesperson Avichay Adraee, aims to sever transportation routes and isolate the region from the remainder of Lebanon. The bridges are identified as primary conduits for goods, people, and movement, and their destruction would severely impede access to essential services and humanitarian aid. Correspondent Obaida Hitto, reporting from Tyre, described the potential consequences, stating that the bridges’ destruction would effectively trap the western Bekaa Valley, hindering movement to Chtoura and limiting access to hospitals and public services. Prior to this escalation, Israeli forces had already destroyed at least six other bridges along the Litani River since initiating their intensified offensive in early March. Beyond bridge demolitions, the expanded ground invasion has fueled widespread anxiety and displacement. Israeli commanders have indicated a strategy to demolish numerous residential buildings within southern Lebanon, further exacerbating the humanitarian crisis. This action threatens to completely isolate southern Lebanon from the western Bekaa and the western Bekaa from the rest of Lebanon. Adding to the devastation, the South Lebanon Water Establishment reported significant damage to vital water infrastructure following Israeli strikes. Key facilities in Ibl al-Saqi and al-Maysat sustained considerable harm, alongside disrupted solar power systems across multiple stations. The civilian water authority vehemently condemned the attacks, citing a violation of international conventions regarding the neutrality of essential services during conflict. The escalating attacks have resulted in a growing number of casualties. On Friday alone, at least four individuals lost their lives in Israeli strikes, including a tragic incident where worshippers leaving a mosque in Sahmar were targeted, claiming two lives. The ongoing conflict, ignited by Hezbollah’s missile strikes against Israel in response to the US-Israeli operation against Iran, has already forced over 1.2 million people to flee their homes. The continued targeting of civilian infrastructure and the resulting displacement represent a severe humanitarian emergency within Lebanon.
