A 32-hour ceasefire has been agreed upon by Russia and Ukraine, despite past violations and ongoing stalled peace negotiations.
A temporary ceasefire between Russia and Ukraine has been established, set to last from 4:00pm local time (13:00 GMT) on Saturday until midnight on Sunday. President Volodymyr Zelenskyy stated that Kyiv would respect the truce if Moscow did. This agreement follows 32 hours of observation by both sides. The ceasefire was ordered by Russian President Vladimir Putin to coincide with Orthodox Easter, a week after Zelenskyy initially proposed it. Despite the agreement, skepticism surrounds the truce’s longevity, citing past violations during a similar ceasefire last year. Prior to the truce’s commencement, Russia launched a drone attack targeting Ukraine’s east and south, resulting in casualties and damage. Ukrainian authorities reported four deaths and dozens of injuries, with the Odesa region experiencing significant damage to civilian infrastructure. Simultaneously, Ukrainian drone attacks resulted in four deaths in Russian-occupied territories of Donetsk and Kherson. Despite the ongoing conflict, a prisoner of war exchange occurred, facilitated by the United Arab Emirates, with 175 prisoners exchanged by both sides. This exchange represents a rare concrete outcome from ongoing US-brokered peace talks, which have remained stalled due to disagreements over territory. Ukraine’s proposed solution of freezing the conflict along current front lines has been rejected by Russia, which demands Ukraine relinquish all control of the Donetsk region. While fighting has largely ceased, Russia has maintained a presence occupying approximately 19% of Ukraine. Recent gains by Ukraine in the southeast and slowed Russian advances since late 2025 are noted.
