Trump’s Ultimatum Poses Threat to Critical Infrastructure, Including Massive Bridge Projects

A deadline issued by the U.S. President could trigger devastating attacks on vital Iranian structures, including a multi-billion dollar bridge project.

The President of the United States, Donald Trump, has issued a demand for Iran to relinquish control of the Strait of Hormuz by Wednesday, threatening to initiate a campaign of destruction against the nation’s infrastructure. This aggressive posture, dubbed “Bridge Day” by the President, raises serious concerns about potential war crimes and the targeting of strategic assets. Just last week, a U.S. aerial strike resulted in the obliteration of the B1 bridge in Karaj, a city west of Tehran, tragically claiming the lives of eight civilians who were enjoying a Nowruz picnic beneath its structure. Analysts believe this attack, along with previous strikes against Iranian universities, hospitals, and research facilities, constitutes a deliberate strategy to impede Iran’s development. Iran possesses an extensive network of bridges and technical structures, with approximately 300,000 total. While the majority are smaller, several key structures represent significant investment and strategic importance. One such project is the Persian Gulf Bridge, located in Hormuzgan province, spanning 3.4 kilometers (2.1 miles) and currently at 15-18 percent completion. This ambitious undertaking, initiated in 2011, aims to link Qeshm Island – a strategically significant island believed to house an underground missile arsenal – with Bandar Abbas, Iran’s largest port. The bridge’s foundations and caissons are already in place, representing a substantial investment of up to $700 million and serving as a central component of the International North-South Transport Corridor, involving nations like India and Russia. The potential destruction of this bridge, along with other critical infrastructure such as power plants, would have far-reaching economic consequences, disrupting trade routes and impacting regional stability. International observers are voicing alarm regarding the potential escalation of conflict should the President proceed with his ultimatum and initiate attacks on Iranian bridges. The scale of potential damage extends beyond the immediate physical structures, impacting decades of national planning and potentially jeopardizing vital economic partnerships.
