The British Embassy Manila and the UK Mission to ASEAN are partnering with the Philippines’ Department of Education (DepEd) to bolster the nation’s education system through the strategic use of technology. This initiative, supported by the UK government’s Foreign, Commonwealth & Development Office and delivered through the EdTech Hub, focuses on improving foundational learning and building a more resilient system. The partnership tackles key areas through expert guidance, piloting the upcoming National EdTech Policy in collaboration with DepEd’s Bureau of Learning and Delivery, and conducting a vital case study on climate and learning continuity.
The collaboration includes several key programs. One is focused on developing the Philippines’ upcoming National EdTech Policy, ensuring it’s inclusive, responsive, and driven by evidence. Another explores how DepEd can better utilize alternative delivery modes to address climate-related disruptions to education. Crucially, the EdTech Hub’s AI Observatory Ministry of Education AI Challenge, involving DepEd’s Education Centre of AI Research (ECAIR), promotes AI experimentation to improve administrative efficiency and expand AI capabilities across the government.
Recognizing the Philippines’ leadership in education technology, the partnership reflects a shared commitment to ensuring every child develops the foundational skills needed to thrive. Secretary Sonny Angara of the Department of Education highlighted this as a key step in accelerating digital transformation, aligning with President Marcos Jr.'s vision for a “Bagong Pilipinas” – nurturing digitally skilled learners ready to compete globally.
