Statements reveal American involvement in destabilizing Iran’s government during widespread demonstrations.
During a recent interview with Fox News, United States President Donald Trump disclosed that Washington had supplied arms to Iranian opposition groups and protesters participating in mass demonstrations that began in December and continued through January. The president stated that the United States provided substantial quantities of weaponry, including to Kurdish factions, intending to disrupt and ultimately overthrow the Iranian government. These revelations directly support claims made by Tehran that the unrest was instigated by external forces. The protests, initially sparked on December 28th by economic grievances among Tehran’s shopkeepers – specifically concerning the declining value of the Iranian rial – rapidly escalated into a nationwide movement involving hundreds of thousands of individuals. Demonstrators voiced demands for governmental change and, by January, the unrest had spread across the country. Following particularly violent crackdowns by Iranian security forces, most notably on January 8th and 9th, thousands were killed, primarily young Iranians, from gunfire and stabbings, while tens of thousands more were arrested. To suppress information flow, Iranian authorities implemented a nationwide internet blackout, according to Amnesty International, hindering independent reporting and observation of the events. The United Nations Special Rapporteur on Iran, Mai Soto, estimated that at least 5,000 people perished during the protests, suggesting a potential death toll of up to 20,000. Furthermore, four individuals have been executed in connection with the demonstrations, with many more awaiting trial. President Trump’s admission, combined with the US and Israel’s subsequent strikes against Iran, has deepened tensions. The president asserted his motivation stemmed from a desire to liberate Iranians from the Islamic Republic’s rule following the government’s violent response to the protests. However, the shifting nature of Trump’s statements regarding the situation creates uncertainty about the precise extent of US involvement and reinforces the concerns of analysts who question the reliability of information surrounding the events.
