Activists Arrested in Protest Against Alleged RAF Role in US-Israel Conflict

Demonstrators near a Suffolk airbase faced arrest following a protest against the use of the facility for operations in the Middle East.

A group of seven individuals were detained by British authorities following a demonstration near the Royal Air Force’s Lakenheath airbase in eastern England. The arrests occurred on Sunday as activists gathered to express their opposition to the alleged deployment of US aircraft from the base in the ongoing US-Israeli conflict with Iran. The protest, organized by the Lakenheath Alliance for Peace, centered around a temporary encampment adjacent to the base. Participants wore apparel bearing the message “We oppose genocide, we support Palestine Action,” highlighting their stance against the perceived actions of the group. Seven individuals, comprised of five men and two women, were taken into custody on suspicion of supporting Palestine Action, a group recently designated as a “terrorist” organization by the British government. This designation, implemented by Prime Minister Keir Starmer’s Labour administration, carries significant legal ramifications for members and supporters of the group. Despite a court ruling last February declaring the ban disproportionate and a violation of free speech rights, the government has appealed the decision, maintaining the prohibition on the organization’s activities. This situation has resulted in widespread arrests of individuals involved in Palestine Action demonstrations, with over 2,700 arrests and hundreds of charges documented by organizers like Defend Our Juries. Police asserted their responsibility to uphold existing laws, regardless of potential future changes. Two other protesters were arrested on Saturday and charged with obstructing public roadways. The situation is further complicated by criticism from US President Donald Trump, who has expressed dissatisfaction with the UK’s stance regarding support for the US-Israel conflict in Iran. The United Kingdom has granted the United States permission to utilize its military bases for “defensive” operations in the Strait of Hormuz, a critical waterway for global oil transportation.
