Ukrainian President Zelenskyy Secures Security Partnership with Syria Amid Regional Tensions

Following diplomatic engagements, Ukrainian military expertise is being offered to Middle Eastern nations, focusing on defense strategies.

Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy concluded a significant diplomatic visit to Damascus, Syria, on Sunday, where he engaged in discussions with Syrian President Ahmed al-Sharaa. This marked Zelenskyy’s first visit to the Syrian capital since the removal of former President Bashar al-Assad in 2024. The primary objective of the meetings was to establish a framework for enhanced security collaboration between the two nations. During the talks, both leaders expressed a shared interest in exchanging military and security knowledge, particularly leveraging Ukraine’s experience in combating drone attacks – a skill honed during its ongoing conflict with Russia. This expertise is being offered to governments within the Middle East, coinciding with heightened regional instability triggered by Iran's retaliatory actions against US and Israeli targets. The agreement also encompasses a focus on bolstering food security, with Zelenskyy highlighting Ukraine’s capacity as a dependable source of grain. Discussions centered around exploring joint initiatives to strengthen food security throughout the region. The visit was further facilitated by a meeting between Zelenskyy and Turkish Foreign Minister Hakan Fidan, alongside Syrian counterparts, signaling a broader network of strategic alliances. This followed a previous meeting with Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan, resulting in commitments for expanded security cooperation and exploration of joint ventures related to gas infrastructure and gasfield development. Syria’s limited air defense capabilities against Iranian drones were acknowledged during the discussions.
