Attacks on Iranian Medical Centers Spark International Outcry

Escalating violence targets vital healthcare infrastructure, prompting pleas for global support and raising concerns about civilian safety.

Following a series of coordinated assaults, the Pasteur Institute in Tehran, a prominent research and public health center, became the latest target of attacks attributed to the United States and Israel. The attacks, which began on February 28th, have resulted in a staggering death toll of 2,076 individuals and 26,500 injuries within Iran. Iranian President Masoud Pezeshkian issued a direct appeal to international health organizations, specifically the World Health Organization, the Red Cross, and Doctors Without Borders, urging them to address what he described as a “crime against humanity.” The President, a former heart surgeon, emphasized the urgency of responding to the attacks on facilities including hospitals and pharmaceutical companies. The Pasteur Institute, established in 1920 through a partnership with the Institut Pasteur of Paris, is renowned throughout the Middle East for its biomedical research. The institute’s work encompasses vital areas such as infectious disease investigation, vaccine production – including those for diseases like tetanus, hepatitis B, and measles – and advanced diagnostic services. It has historically played a critical role in combating endemic diseases like smallpox and cholera, and continues to support Iran’s national immunization program. Furthermore, the institute maintains close collaborations with the World Health Organization, with two departments actively engaged in joint projects. The WHO Director-General, Tedros Adhanom Ghebreyesus, highlighted the broader impact of the conflict on healthcare delivery and the safety of personnel and patients within Iran's medical facilities. Since March 1st, over 20 verified attacks on healthcare infrastructure across Iran have been documented by the World Health Organization, underscoring the severity and continued nature of the assault. The attacks have been condemned internationally, with accusations of aggression directed at the United States and Israel.
