President Trump has shifted leadership within the Justice Department, appointing Todd Blanche as acting attorney general following Pam Bondi’s departure.
The United States President, Donald Trump, has initiated a change in leadership within the Department of Justice, announcing that Pam Bondi will be transitioning out of her role as Attorney General. The President conveyed this decision through a statement on his social media platform, Truth Social, indicating Bondi’s move into a position within the private sector. This personnel shift follows a tumultuous 14-month tenure for Bondi at the Justice Department. Trump described her as a “loyal friend” before appointing Todd Blanche, previously a key criminal defense lawyer for the President, to serve as the acting attorney general. The President also mentioned considering Lee Zeldin, the current head of the Environmental Protection Agency, as a potential permanent replacement. Pam Bondi, 60, previously held the office of Florida’s Attorney General from 2011 to 2019, a position she secured after over eighteen years as a prosecutor in Hillsborough County. During her time in Florida, she cultivated a reputation for aggressively tackling crime, specifically focusing on combating human trafficking, addressing child abuse concerns, and confronting the opioid crisis through the regulation of pain clinics. Bondi was also a prominent figure in several high-profile legal battles, including the unsuccessful attempts to repeal the Affordable Care Act and supporting Florida’s previous ban on same-sex marriage. Her involvement extended beyond Florida, as she served on Trump’s opioid commission and was part of his legal team during the first impeachment trial against the President. She also played a role in challenging the results of the 2020 presidential election. Recent scrutiny has centered around her limited involvement in the legal proceedings concerning Jeffrey Epstein, specifically regarding the non-prosecution agreement that allowed Epstein to avoid federal charges. Bondi stated that the transition would occur over the coming month, expressing gratitude for the trust placed in her to promote safety. Her departure occurred amidst heightened political pressure and a contentious congressional hearing where she faced pointed questioning. The exact nature of Bondi's future private sector role remains undisclosed, with the President stating it would be announced “at a date in the near future.”
