On March 18, 2026, students, staff, and members of NASA’s Langley Research Center gathered to dedicate a newly planted Artemis Moon Tree at Mary W. Jackson Elementary School in Hampton, Virginia. The tree, a loblolly pine, had already been planted on November 21st, 2025, thanks to the efforts of students and staff, marking a significant milestone for the school and the surrounding community. This extraordinary addition is a testament to NASA’s commitment to engaging students in space exploration and fostering a deeper understanding of science and engineering.
The tree’s story begins with a seed that traveled to the Moon as part of the Artemis I mission in 2022. Following its return to Earth, the seed was cultivated into a sapling by the U.S. Department of Agriculture Forest Service, before being entrusted to NASA eClips educators. These educators, part of NASA’s Science Activation Program, worked diligently to nurture the sapling and ultimately facilitate its planting by third through fifth grade students at Mary W. Jackson Elementary School, honoring the legacy of Mary W. Jackson, NASA’s first Black female engineer.
The planting event highlighted the collaborative spirit driving the project, emphasizing the coordination essential to NASA’s missions. Students formed teams – Earth Excavators, Compost Crew, Mulch Movers, and Water Brigade – each contributing to the careful planting process.
