Romuald Wadagni, a former Finance Minister, is expected to win Benin’s presidential election, facing challenges including high poverty rates and security threats from extremist groups.
Benin’s presidential election commenced on Sunday, with Romuald Wadagni, a former Deloitte executive, favored to win without a significant opponent. Over 7.9 million registered voters, including 62,000 in the diaspora, will participate in the election, which runs from 7 am to 4 pm GMT. Wadagni’s campaign is supported by the two main governing parties and outgoing President Patrice Talon. He is competing against Paul Hounkpe, a former culture minister, who has campaigned with limited visibility. The path to the ballot for Hounkpe was secured through the support of lawmakers from the ruling coalition, who initially blocked the candidacy of Rene Agbodjo. Patrice Talon, who is barred from running again after serving two terms, has overseen a period of economic growth, reaching 7% last year, but has also been criticized for suppressing opposition and targeting critics. A failed military coup attempt in December further underscored the instability. A key challenge for the incoming president is the significant wealth gap in Benin, with a poverty rate exceeding 30%. Many citizens feel that economic growth has not benefited them, and the country faces serious security concerns. Benin has been particularly vulnerable to attacks by Jama’at Nusrat al-Islam wal-Muslimin (JNIM), an al-Qaeda affiliate, originating from the central Sahel region. Wadagni has outlined priorities, including expanding access to clean water and guaranteeing healthcare for all, aiming to eradicate extreme poverty. However, Hounkpe contends that progress hasn't been realized for Benin’s 14 million people, citing a “climate of fear” created by the ruling coalition’s dominance and suppression of the opposition. Concerns have been raised about the shrinking political space for dissenting voices, as the ruling coalition controls all seats in the National Assembly. Provisional results are anticipated on Tuesday, although voter turnout appears low.
