The humanitarian crisis in Gaza continues to deepen, marked by relentless violence and a crumbling healthcare system.

On January 12, 2026, UNICEF and its partners brought a glimmer of hope to Jabalia, North Gaza, establishing the first Primary Health Care Centre and Child-Friendly Space/Learning Space – a vital step in providing basic services amidst the ongoing devastation. This small victory, captured by UNICEF photographer Rawan Eleyan, stands in stark contrast to the pervasive reality of the region, where the ceasefire remains fragile and Israeli forces continue to launch airstrikes. The situation remains critically urgent, with the healthcare system functionally collapsed, leaving millions vulnerable to preventable diseases and injuries.
Despite the implementation of a ceasefire last October, the conflict has escalated dramatically in recent months. Routine bombardment is pushing displaced communities beyond their limits, while persistent blockages of humanitarian aid are severely hindering relief efforts and depriving thousands of life-saving essentials. According to reports, over 72,000 Palestinians have been killed and 172,000 injured since October 7, 2023, with the number of casualties tragically rising and a staggering 94% of Gaza’s hospitals destroyed or damaged. The IRC’s Senior Protection Manager, Faten, emphasizes the enduring nature of the emergency, citing widespread food insecurity and the relentless threat to civilian lives.
The situation is further complicated by ongoing security incidents and deliberate targeting of humanitarian assets. UN personnel, including over 391 UN personnel, have been killed since the war began. Recent weeks have seen a surge in security incidents, with gunfire and shelling reported across Gaza, particularly in densely populated areas. A recent incident involved a UNRWA school in Jabalia being struck by gunfire, injuring displaced civilians seeking shelter, while other humanitarian facilities were targeted by airstrikes and stone-throwing, underscoring the urgent need for compliance with international humanitarian law and the protection of civilians and civilian infrastructure.
