The Republic of Paraguay took a significant step on the global stage this week, formally signing the Artemis Accords in Asunción, marking its entry into a growing coalition dedicated to the peaceful and responsible exploration of space. NASA Administrator Jared Isaacman celebrated the occasion, highlighting Paraguay's inclusion as a “like-minded nation” committed to the principles established by the Accords. This agreement, initially spearheaded by President Trump, provides a framework for collaborative efforts in lunar and deep space missions, aiming to guide exploration beyond Earth.
The signing represents a pivotal moment for Paraguay’s burgeoning space program. The Paraguayan Space Agency, founded in 2014, has been steadily developing its capabilities in satellite technology and Earth observation, collaborating with international partners like NASA. Notably, the agency successfully launched its first satellite, GuaraníSat-1, from the International Space Station in 2021, and is currently preparing for the launch of GuaraníSat-2 in October, utilizing a Falcon 9 rocket from Vandenberg Space Force Base.
